For Industry 5.0, automation is not simply a matter of replacing manual movement with machines. In the warehouse, resilience depends on how effectively technology supports people while adapting to changing demand, constrained labour markets and demanding service levels.

Autonomous mobile robots address one visible problem by reducing travel during picking. The broader challenge is maintaining flow between picking, replenishment, returns, sortation and dispatch. If each function is managed independently, additional automation can create new queues, congestion or unresolved exceptions instead of improving the whole operation.

The software considers order urgency, storage locations, available resources, workload and congestion, then adjusts work as conditions evolve. The same logic reaches manual and difficult-to-access areas through the Ocado IQ App. Bridge gives supervisors a live operational picture covering pick rates, queues, fleet availability, congestion and service-level performance. The Ocado Mobile Robot Systems platform also supports aisle-specific picking. Sweep pairs a worker with one robot in narrower aisles, while Rendezvous places several robots at controlled points in high-volume aisles. Running both approaches concurrently allows the facility to reflect its physical diversity rather than imposing one standard method.

Efficiency, space and scalable resilience

Better coordination can support a leaner fleet. Fewer robots competing for the same routes may reduce congestion, idling, charging demand and parking requirements, returning floor space to productive use. Capacity can then be expanded in layers, with everyday, flexible and peak units matched to actual demand.
