Gdańsk throughput milestone highlights pressure on port systems
The Port of Gdańsk handled more than 8 million tonnes in August, a first for the Polish Baltic gateway. The result was 13.3% higher than in August 2025 and provides a clear indicator of strong cargo activity across the region.
Throughput for January to August 2026 reached 57.7 million tonnes, up 10% year on year. The monthly result also exceeded July’s 7.9 million tonnes. For industrial companies using maritime supply routes, the figures suggest that planning must account for rising demand across more than one cargo profile.
Diversification supports resilience
General cargo rose 21%, adding nearly 470,000 tonnes year on year. Container tonnage increased 15%, and TEU volumes grew 16%. These gains are relevant not only to terminal operators but also to manufacturers that depend on predictable container availability and connections to inland distribution networks.
Liquid fuels remained the dominant category at 3.9 million tonnes, up 5% and representing almost half of August’s throughput. Ore volumes increased 311% and grain 90%. Other bulk cargo fell 12%, showing that growth was broad but not uniform. A mix of rising container, bulk and energy flows can improve resilience by reducing reliance on one segment, while also making capacity coordination more complex.
Infrastructure and digital operations
After eight months, liquid fuels accounted for approximately 26 million tonnes and general cargo for 20.8 million tonnes. Further investment in port facilities and inland access could help the gateway absorb higher volumes. In practical terms, that may increase the value of integrated scheduling, cargo visibility, automated handling and data exchange between terminals, carriers and industrial customers. The available figures do not quantify automation or sustainability performance, so they should not be read as evidence of specific technology deployments.
If the current level of activity continues through the remaining months, Gdańsk is positioned for a stronger full-year result in 2026. The latest figures and supporting information are available from intermodalnews.eu.
