Ewals uses fleet renewal to bring aerodynamic technology into UK operations
Ewals Cargo Care is using its regular fleet replacement cycle to introduce aerodynamic vehicle technology into its UK operation. The company has begun deploying 27 Volvo FH Aero trucks, linking an efficiency-focused upgrade with a broader objective of maintaining a modern and sustainable transport asset base.
Five vehicles have arrived so far. The rest are scheduled to follow at approximately five trucks per week. All 27 will operate in the UK and replace older vehicles, meaning the programme is primarily a technology-led renewal rather than a simple increase in capacity.

From vehicle design to measurable operations
The FH Aero is a new addition to the UK division, while the model already has a role in Ewals Cargo Care’s continental European fleet. That existing use gives the business an operational reference as it introduces the truck into another part of its network.
The commercial rationale is based on the relationship between purchase price and running costs. Aerodynamic performance is central to the vehicle. Its cab has been shaped to manage airflow more effectively, taking advantage of European legislation that permits a slightly longer design. Camera mirror systems replace conventional mirrors, reducing external drag and supporting lower fuel use and emissions.
This is relevant to industrial operators because fleet sustainability is often determined by repeated daily performance rather than isolated technology demonstrations. A truck that spends much of its working life on the road can turn aerodynamic improvements into an operational variable, provided the equipment is deployed consistently and managed as part of a structured replacement plan.
Human-centred technology in a connected operation
The investment also addresses the human side of transport operations. Driver-oriented features are intended to improve visibility, comfort and ease of use. These elements do not replace operational discipline or fleet management, but they can contribute to driver satisfaction, retention and dependable performance over long-distance routes.
When all deliveries are complete, the UK truck fleet is expected to total approximately 90 vehicles. Ewals will continue to operate a mixed fleet supplied by multiple leading manufacturers. This approach preserves sourcing flexibility while allowing the company to introduce a specific vehicle platform where its efficiency and usability case is strongest.
The programme illustrates a practical Industry 5.0 principle: technology adoption can combine resource efficiency with human usability. In this case, aerodynamic design and camera systems are being introduced alongside improvements aimed at the people who operate the assets every day.
