Tesco links low-GWP refrigeration with fleet resilience
Tesco is combining a lower-impact refrigeration technology with established service and compliance processes in a five-trailer deployment across its UK logistics network. The retailer has selected Carrier Transicold Vector HE 19 Low CO2 Emissions units for 13.6-metre Gray & Adams trailers.
The equipment uses R454A refrigerant, whose certified global warming potential is 239. That compares with a GWP of 2,140 for R452A, a refrigerant commonly used in trailer refrigeration. The alternative therefore reduces GWP by nearly 90% while maintaining equivalent cooling performance, an important consideration for operators that cannot compromise temperature control to meet environmental objectives.
Technology and operational safeguards
Carrier redesigned the Vector HE 19 internally for the ultra-low-GWP refrigerant. The system retains the operating experience of the standard Vector platform but adds safeguards aimed at limiting refrigerant release. Sensors identify leaks, while an automatic pump-down process recovers refrigerant if a leak occurs, reducing the potential discharge of fluorinated greenhouse gases.
This approach places the technology within a wider operational system rather than treating the refrigeration unit as a standalone hardware upgrade. Carrier Transicold and its service partners are training technicians in the new refrigerant and associated equipment. Specialised tools and maintenance resources are also being supplied, alongside continuing technical and operational advice.
Resilience depends on service continuity
Tesco operates more than 2,900 stores in the UK. The new trailers will transport ambient, chilled and frozen goods seven days a week, so the environmental benefit must coexist with availability, regulatory assurance and reliable temperature management.
