A physical infrastructure upgrade gives Ewals Cargo Care a more resilient UK fleet base

Ewals Cargo Care has opened a four-acre Trucking Hub in Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire, creating a consolidated base for its UK and Ireland fleet operations. The project is less about adding a standalone depot than about redesigning how essential transport functions interact.

The site sits close to the A14 and A1, giving vehicles efficient access to southern ports, the Midlands and northern England. It provides accommodation for trucks, trailers and staff vehicles and works alongside established satellite operations in Immingham and Seaham.

Integration before automation

The new facility does not rely on a claim of full automation. Its operational value comes from bringing coordination, driver support and maintenance into a shared environment. Modern offices, security measures, welfare areas and training facilities provide the people and process infrastructure required to run a distributed transport network more consistently.

An outsourced maintenance partner is stationed at the hub. This arrangement can shorten the path between identifying a vehicle issue and returning equipment to service, while the location itself helps limit unnecessary off-route running. In practical Industry 5.0 terms, the investment supports the interaction between employees, assets and operational data rather than treating technology as a substitute for the workforce.

Resilience through consolidation

Steve Foster, UK Depot Manager, said the site was developed to support changing customer supply chains and sustainable growth. Ewals Cargo Care has been established locally for more than 20 years, but its former split between administration and vehicle accommodation made expansion less straightforward.

The new hub is designed for current activity and future capacity. Centralising the base should improve teamwork and make fleet availability easier to manage, while the satellite sites retain geographic reach. The result is a more coherent operating platform for UK movements and transport to and from Europe.
