A higher-capacity cold chain: Romac links fleet scale with site expansion
Romac Logistics is treating fleet renewal as part of a wider operating-system upgrade for its temperature-controlled network. The UK provider has ordered 100 moving double-deck refrigerated trailers from Tiger Trailers and 200 Renault Trucks T480 tractor units through Diamond Trucks.
The timing is significant: the vehicle programme follows the opening of Romac’s flagship distribution facility in Chesterfield. Rather than adding transport assets in isolation, the company is scaling its physical infrastructure and fleet together, a model that can help industrial logistics operators align throughput, vehicle availability and customer growth.
Capacity with fewer vehicle movements
Each new trailer is designed for up to 54 pallets and uses a Thermo King A500 single-temperature refrigeration unit. The moving double-deck arrangement creates additional usable loading capacity for chilled and frozen goods. Romac and Tiger Trailers also point to the possibility of carrying more product with fewer journeys.
That operating model has two practical implications. Higher payload per movement can improve asset utilisation, while fewer vehicle movements may support the operator’s sustainability objectives. The trailers have also been engineered around operator safety and durability, important requirements when new equipment is deployed across a demanding cold-chain network.
Resilience depends on the complete fleet
The 200 Renault Trucks T480s provide the tractor capacity needed to put the new trailers into service at scale. Renault Trucks says the vehicles are intended to support fuel efficiency, total cost of ownership, sustainability, uptime, safety and driver comfort. Together, those factors influence whether added capacity translates into dependable service rather than simply a larger asset base.
The programme extends established supplier relationships. Tiger Trailers previously supplied Romac with 60 ambient curtainsiders and 20 single-deck refrigerated trailers, while Renault Trucks and Diamond Trucks have supported the company over several years.
Romac founder Rob McAdoo said the investment would give the business the capacity, capability and resilience required for its next phase. For industrial companies managing temperature-sensitive flows, the project demonstrates the value of combining equipment specification with site strategy and long-term supplier collaboration.
