Compact autonomous forklift brings heavier loads into Industry 5.0 workflows

Global AGV’s L20 raises autonomous forklift capacity to two tonnes with only a limited change in vehicle length. The development shows how incremental automation can address real production constraints without a major facility redesign.

Compact autonomous forklift brings heavier loads into Industry 5.0 workflows

Industrial automation does not always require a new building, a redesigned warehouse or a complete fleet replacement. Global AGV’s new L20 autonomous forklift illustrates a more incremental approach: the vehicle increases payload capacity to two tonnes while preserving the width and height of the company’s existing models.

The Danish manufacturer developed the L20 after customers asked for a solution above the 1,400 kg capacity of the L14. The new vehicle lifts 600 kg more, a 40% increase, but is only 12 cm longer. Its compact operating envelope matters in factories and warehouses where pallet routes run between fixed equipment, storage locations and production areas.

Automation aligned with the physical plant

For Industry 5.0 projects, the value of automation depends partly on how well it fits the people, processes and infrastructure already in place. A vehicle that needs wider aisles or extensive reconstruction can weaken the business case. Global AGV is positioning the L20 differently: higher capacity is added without changing the established width and height.

The forklift is intended to turn in confined spaces and move loaded pallets autonomously between specified points, ultimately supporting delivery to the loading dock. This can make repetitive internal transport more consistent while allowing operators to concentrate on other activities.

The application case is especially clear in food processing. Ingredients including flour and butter can be transported in heavy bulk bags, creating pallet weights that exceed the L14’s limits. Three L20 units are already deployed at international production sites, with two in Iceland moving heavy fish pallets.

Productivity, resilience and practical payback

Global AGV forms part of BILA Group. The group’s concept is based on removing repeated forklift driving from routine work and redirecting human effort towards tasks with greater value.

The company says some users may recover the investment in under a year, for example where automation allows two employees to take on other responsibilities. The L20 does not by itself guarantee those outcomes, but it expands the range of loads that can be included in an autonomous material-flow strategy. Its limited dimensional change also supports resilience by reducing dependence on a major layout intervention.
