Kolding project extends GLS logistics stack with automation

GLS is developing a new fulfilment centre in Kolding that will bring storage and order processing closer to its parcel infrastructure. The project represents the company’s first fulfilment operation in Denmark and is aimed at small and medium-sized e-commerce businesses.

The centre will start with 5,000 square metres of operational space. Its layout allows expansion to 15,000 square metres, with another 550 square metres for administration. GLS expects the site to be ready ahead of the 2027 peak season.

Linking inventory to delivery

The facility will be built at Trianglen, roughly two kilometres from the GLS Denmark hub. That location is designed to create a short, direct handover between warehouse operations and the national parcel network. In practical terms, retailers will be able to use one connected setup for stock holding, picking, packing and dispatch.

The planned technical configuration is semi-automated. An AutoStore system will provide automated storage, while an automated sorting belt will support the movement of prepared orders. Together, the technologies are intended to reduce manual handling and make capacity easier to adjust as volumes change.

This approach addresses a common operational challenge for online retailers: coordinating inventory and fulfilment with final delivery. By bringing these stages together, the centre may help businesses position stock nearer to consumers while avoiding separate logistics interfaces. The wider group is described at GLS.

A scalable node in a growing network

Kolding is part of GLS’s fulfilment expansion since 2023. Existing facilities in Germany, Hungary, Spain, Slovenia and Canada show how the parcel group is building a broader service layer around its delivery network.

Scalability is built into the Danish project both through additional floor space and through automation. This gives the operation room to respond to e-commerce growth without requiring an immediate second site. The project is also expected to create around 30 jobs in Kolding.
