UK hauliers turn to fleet data as driver costs accelerate

Britain’s haulage industry is approaching a workforce bottleneck that has both economic and operational consequences. Forecasts suggest the sector could need 400,000 new HGV drivers each year to meet demand. Yet the pipeline of younger workers remains limited: fewer than 2% of UK HGV drivers are below 24, while more than 55% are aged 50 to 65.

This imbalance leaves operators exposed to future retirements and makes each recruitment decision more expensive. The challenge is not only the availability of labour, but also the cost of making a new entrant operational.

A more expensive route into haulage

Training costs in UK road haulage have doubled in ten years, according to Dojo’s UK Inflation Index. Insurance costs have risen by 57% over the same period. Higher premiums for less experienced drivers could make the industry’s need to attract younger recruits particularly costly.

Staffing costs increased by 44% in the past year. The rise reflects factors including higher National Insurance contributions in 2025, alongside wage competition between operators. For businesses whose margins depend heavily on driver availability, these increases can affect fleet economics and service decisions.

Digitalisation supports resilience

Telematics offers a practical way to improve efficiency while the labour market remains constrained. Live location information can help planners refine routes, limit empty or inefficient running and control fuel use. Behavioural data can also expose idling, harsh braking and aggressive acceleration.

These insights support targeted operational changes rather than blanket cost-cutting. More efficient driving can reduce avoidable consumption, while better route visibility helps companies use existing vehicles and personnel more productively.

Telematics is not a substitute for training or recruitment, and it cannot remove the demographic pressure facing the sector. Its value lies in strengthening resilience: with clearer data, operators can make faster decisions, protect capacity and reduce the cost of serving each movement.
