Digital warehouse gives Panabad room to scale frozen bakery operations
Panabad has built a digitally managed logistics base for its expanding frozen bakery business, opening a 2,500 m² centre in Sant Quirze del Vallès near Barcelona. The project brings together Mecalux’s Easy WMS and high-density storage to improve capacity, traceability and execution.
The company handles more than 7,000 tonnes of flour annually and supplies over 2,000 customers. Its new warehouse manages more than 200 SKUs of pre-cooked frozen bread products, giving the business a more structured platform for a broad and growing product flow.
Capacity and visibility in one operating model
Two high-density storage solutions provide capacity for over 3,000 pallets. For a temperature-controlled operation, this approach is significant: increasing storage density can help accommodate additional goods within an existing footprint, while avoiding an immediate need for more warehouse space.
Easy WMS records each pallet at goods-in and assigns a storage location based on turnover and volume. That rule-based process supports consistent inventory placement and improves visibility over stock movements. Details of the technology are available from Mecalux.
Digital instructions reduce cold-store travel
The warehouse runs at -20°C, so productivity cannot be separated from the conditions in which work is carried out. Operators receive picking paths through radio-frequency terminals. The routes are designed to remove unnecessary travel, helping employees complete orders more quickly and spend less time inside the cold store.
Panabad general manager Julián Martín says the system provides a more efficient way to prepare orders while limiting exposure to low temperatures. The example highlights a practical Industry 5.0 lesson: digital tools can improve throughput while supporting a more manageable working environment.
For Panabad, the centre creates resilience through better information, denser use of infrastructure and repeatable processes. It does not eliminate the operational demands of frozen logistics, but gives the company a stronger basis for handling them as volumes increase.
